The Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology (non-teaching) with a concentration in Biological Anthropology

 

A major in Anthropology leading to the Bachelor of Science (non-teaching) degree with a concentration in Biological Anthropology consists of a minimum of 54-57 semester hours. This includes 27 semester hours of required course work in the major and 27-30 semester hours of related practicum, intra-, and inter-disciplinary course work in the Biological Anthropology concentration. A minimum of 18 hours taken to fulfill the major in anthropology must be taken at Appalachian State University.

 

Major requirements consist of 27 semester hours in anthropology:

  • ANT 1215 Intro to Cultural Anthropology

  • ANT 1220 Intro to Archaeology

  • ANT 1230 Intro to Biological Anthropology

  • ANT 3220 Human Biological Variation

  • ANT 3405 Quantitative Methods

  • ANT 4310 Human Osteology

  • ANT 4320 Human Evolution

  • choice of 4330 Bioarchaeology or 4340 Paleoanthropology of South Asia.

  • ANT 4550 Senior Seminar

Requirements for the concentration in Biological Anthropology include:

  • Three to six semester hours from the following choices in Archaeology: ANT 2235, 3120, 3200, 3250, 4110, 4402, or courses such as ANT 3500-3549, subject to approval.

  •  Three semester hours of coursework from the following choices in Cultural Anthropology: ANT 2420, 2700, 3420, 3550, 4130, 4425, 4570, 4600, or courses such as ANT 3500-3549, subject to approval.

  •  Three semester hours of practicum (ANT 3500 or 4900) is required. These hours must be designed in consultation with the major advisor and are subject to approval.

Eighteen semester hours of inter-disciplinary work in courses above the 1000 level with the following prefixes: BIO, CHE, CJ, ES, GHY, GLY, MAT, and/or STT. These courses must be chosen in consultation with an advisor and are subject to approval.

 

In addition to General Education and the above requirements, 21-24 hours of electives must be taken to total 122 semester hours required for the B.S. degree.
